The Bureau of Land Management has scanned numerous land patents and allows users to search online for the actual document. Knowing where our ancestors had land, and who lived around them, can be very helpful in our search for relatives.

The land patent search tool for researchers allows one to see the initial transfer of land titles from the Federal Government to individuals. It includes a copy of the actual land patent which can be downloaded as a pdf for free, or a certified or "fancy paper" copy can be ordered from the site. Try searching with only Location and Name if you don't know the land description.
