Research by Relatives
A word of advice after my long hiatus while this website was broken...
DOWNLOAD ANY INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR FAMILY because it may not be there the next time you visit the site.
These sites are maintained by relatives, and contain information such as stories, photographs, images of records, etc., that may help with your own research. These links were added a number of years ago and unfortunately, quite a few of these sites no longer exist. The good news is that some were found on the Internet Archives Wayback Machine.
Our Family Genealogy Pages - Jamile is a descendant of Henry Claud Sims and Manila Sylvania Cosby. Their daughter Josephine Sims married Arthur Freeman Prince, so there are Prince photos on her site, along with a lot of Sims memorabilia. [Side note: she uses The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding for her site.]
Some Nineteenth Century Blount County Alabama Families by Kenneth O. Sims - Kenneth has done extensive research on several surnames from Alabama, and has posted his research on the web. Surnames are: Hicks, Gurley, Cozby, Hughes, Powell, Ratliff, Abel, Chandler, Thornhill, Sims, and he also has a transcript of the Baird-Sims Bible. Another wonderful site gone, but still exists on the Internet Archives Wayback Machine at this url: bellsouthpwp.net/k/o/kosims He has given permission to post his research pages on the DescendantsOf site, and they can be found by clicking the Blount AL Families link in the menu on the left, or here: Blount Co, AL Families by Kenneth Sims.
Kenneth Sims and Inez A. Love wrote the book Dorman: Some Descendants of The Reverend James Hiram and Mariah A. Cox Dorman. The book is out of print, but permission has been given to post a digital copy on the DescendantOf site. The book is in searchable PDF format. It is a large file, so allow a few minutes for it to download and open. Kenneth is a descendant of Van Buren Dorman and Nancy LouVessie Hicks Dorman.
The Gurley Families of the South - Ted Gurley has compiled an extensive record of the Gurley families, which includes mention of a number of surnames from our Blount County families, including Cozby, Gray, Hall, Hicks, Hix, Holt, Huffstutler, Little, Lynch, Montgomery, Watson, and Wright. How these families may connect is currently unknown.
Connie Anderson & Robert Johnston Family Trees - (familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/j/o/h/Robert-F-Johnston/index.html?Welcome=1019345800 is a broken link). Connie is descended from William Alexander Burns and Sarah Ann Margrette Vaughn, daughter of Thomas Absalom and Elizabeth Ann Mapp Vaughn. Unfortunately, there are not Internet Archives for this website.
The Inman United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, GA asked its members to write biographical sketches of their ancestors. The result is a wonderful website chock full of information on several of our family and allied lines, including Dorman, Hightower, Chambers, Gray (though I don't yet know if this is MY Gray), Banks, and many others. I saved a few of these pages years ago, the ones about my family, and have posted them on this site only for logged in users. The church redid their website and omitted the family genealogy pages. I've reached out to the church to find out if they've posted them to a new site, but haven't heard back from them. The old site can still be found on the Internet Archives Wayback Machine at this url: members.aol.com/InmanGA/family.html
The Compiled Genealogy Research of David L. Casey (archived on the Wayback Machine) contains an old manuscript by Pat Goad White with information on the Cary Cox family and the house they built (still standing) near Stanfordville, GA. It also has information about and a map to the old Cox-Griggs burying grounds. The site is no longer in existence except in the Internet Archives Wayback Machine. [Note from Webmaster - Don't be sad, I visited Stanfordville in 2009 and took pictures of the Cox house and Cox-Griggs burying grounds which have been posted on this site, so all is not lost!].
Gilliland Trails - On the Trail of Gilliland Family History maintained by Kate Maynard. Margaret McCauley (sister to my James McCauley) and grand-daughter of Samuel and Jane Knox McCauley, married David Cauis Gilliland. In the Historical and Biographical section of the site for Alabama, there is a download of an article published in The Gadsden Times 18 February 1967: Lore From Hills of Home, by Jerry Jones, Gilliland Family Among Early Settlers. Jerry Jones is the gg-grandson of Wiley Buford Gilliland The site appears to be abandoned, as the last entry was made in 2013, and the forum page is up for sale for a ridiculous amount of money ($13,000+). However, the links seem to still work, and provide downloads of the information. So capture it as quickly as you can if you need the information.
If you have a working link for the broken sites, please let me know.
EMAIL ME with the URL if you want your website listed here. It must have family associations, or be related to the families found on this site.
