My Vaughn family moved to Cherokee County, Alabama from Virginia, making stops in North and South Carolina. Some of them stayed in the Centre area, while others moved to De Kalb, Blount, and Jefferson counties.
Thomas Absolem "Ab" Vaughn was in Cedar Bluff Alabama, living in the Round Mountain area, from about 1835 until the early 1850's, when he and his family moved to Blount County, Alabama. Both he and Hartwell Vaughn, Sr. showed up in Cherokee County Alabama in the mid 1830's, but their relationship has not yet been determined. Hartwell and wife Nancy Walls had 7 children, 5 girls and 2 boys, though only two names can be proven - Hartwell, Jr. and Ginsey Jane. Hartwell Jr. was born February 7, 1829, and Ab was born February 18, 1818, so it is possible they are brothers or cousins. Ab is the correct age to be the eldest son of Hartwell and Nancy, but a delemma exists in a Southern Claims Commission filing by Hartwell, Sr. He states in one of the interrogatories that : I never had any relations in the rebel army that I no of, the only son that I had took his family during the war and went north. However, research shows that both Hartwell Jr. and Thomas Absalom served in the Confederate Army, and at the time of this claim, 1874, both were still living. Parents of Ab and Hartwell, Sr. have not been discovered as of yet, though there is a promising lead that Hartwell Sr.'s mother may be Alsey Bentley. Both Hartwell, Sr. and Christopher Lemuel Vaughn served in Mean's 1st Regiment South Carolina Militia War of 1812, so there is a high probability all these Vaughn families are closely related.
