Roll 595, Vansandt, C. - Vaughn, W.

Surname vertical file - Vaughn
From microfilm, Birmingham public library, Birmingham AL

There is a LOT of information on Vaughan/Vaughn, including family queries, newspaper articles, genealogy letters passed around by relatives, hunting their line, etc. Some include marriage records from various states, DAR records, census records, lineages, family bible records, wills, land records, many others.
I was primarily looking for Absolom Vaughn, b. SC (prob Union Co) cir. 1817, or Hartwell Vaughn, who I am trying to prove a relationship to (possibly uncle). I ignored Vaughns in Mobile county, not realizing at the time that some of my Vaughn’s moved there. Must research this file again.

Goes on to tell of Tennessee records, and Wilson Co, Tenn. The last paragraph at bottom of page says:

“ If the Hunley Vaughan we are looking for married in SC after the Revolutionary War (1783-86) we will not be able to learn who he married. Unless we find it in a Bible or news paper, it may be in a church record, but the State of South Carolina did not require a marriage license until about 1915. I first will try in Pittsylvania Co, Va.”

Document #00831
Copied from a newspaper article from the Moulton Advertiser, date unknown - an old lineage of the Vaughan family, going back to Wales. (Note-an odd coincidence - just found a lineage on my Cozby family back to Ireland - at one point one of them had gone to Jamaca. This Vaughan family of England lineage has one sentence that says: Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan took up their residence for a time in Jamacia in the West Indies, where Mr. Vaughan had a large plantation, and their eldest son, Benjamin Vaughan - the best known of a distinguished family - was born in 1751.)

Document #00832
There is no doubt of the fact that the name is of Welsh origin. The Welsh word “vuchan”, little in stature, is the source of the name, which is therefore akin to the English Little and the German Klein.
