Moses Higginbotham (son of John, brother of Robert) moved to Tazewell County prior to 1800. He was a hatter by trade, and made fur hats, and he selected for his home a spot where squirrels were plentiful. The old homestead was situated less than a mile from Liberty Hill, or Knob. This village was a prominant business and social center. He died Nov. 1, 1826, and at the time of his death was possessed of considerable property. The homestead, or "old plantation," as he calls it in his will, consisted of 400 acres. It is still held in the family, and is now owned by his great grand-daughter, Mrs. A. P. Gillespie of Tazewell.

In addition to his lands, he left personal propery valued at $5,000. Of this, $3,000 consisted of 9 slaves.

John Little and Susannah Little sell for $200 to Robert Higginbotham Blount county - SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 26 T14 R1W containing thirty nine 99/100 acres

He married Elizabeth Little,2 05-15-1817 in Madison County, Alabama,2 born about 1799 (possibly in Pendleton Dist), South Carolina,[47] (her mother was Annaretta Little). She died after 1870 probably in Blount County, Alabama.[48]

The 1850 census for Blount County, Alabama shows her as Elisabeth, 1860 lists her as Isabella, born about 1804, in 1870 her name is back to Elizabeth, so it is suspected that the census taker "guessed" in 1860.

Elizabeth's (probable) sister Nancy married Robert's brother William. When William died in 1844, Robert was appointed guardian of Williams orphans.

Assumption: this is the Nancy who married Josiah Jackson Cowden, as Wm. H. Higginbotham signed the bond, and she has a brother with this name.

She married Josiah Jackson Cowden, also known as Jack, 11-10-1842 in Blount County, Alabama,[63] born about 1821 in Blount County, Alabama,[64] (son of Elijah Cowden and Anna Pettigrew) died 04- 8-1898 in Morris, Alabama.64

He was known as a scalawag (a northern sympathizer during the Civil War), which was probably a very dangerous position to take in that time period!

(The following item was provided by Melba Lowe, genealogist in Blount County, Alabama who often works with the museum in Oneonta.)

A short autobiography of James Monroe Fendley scribbled off for the most part on the solitary banks of Bloulder Creek, Colorado, in August, 1929, and copied in August 1930 by Jessie Nave Fendley. (I only have 4 typed pages, but the last page ends in the middle of a sentence, so the original is longer.)

"These events occurred before I was 11 years old. We moved from Village Springs in 1871. The reason we wanted to get away was on account of a neighborhood feud that had existed for years between the Poseys and the Higginbothams. There were constant quarrels and threats and fights, and now and then a killing. We tried to get along peaceably with both sides, but one day at school Bud had a fight with one of the Higginbotham boys. That evening about dusk from a clump of trees behind our house a shot rang out, then in a minute another, and at regular intervals another, and another, until it seems to me a hundred shots had been fired. That was all. It was only a bluff, of course, but my mother was so terrorized that the next morning Bud was packed off to Uncle Bill Edwards, who was teaching school over on the mountain. I think probably it was there where he joined the Ku Klux, as my Uncle was a Cyclops or some such officer in the order. Later, on one of the raids, Bud rode his little mule, covered with a bed sheet, through Shan Higginbotham's big house, to the consernation of the entire Klan. Higginbotham was a northern sympathizer, and threatened to shoot the first Ku Klux that showed himself about the place."

(note by compiler - James Fendley was born May 1860, so these events probably happened between 1865-1871.)

He married Anna Melissa Cowden,2 about 1851 in Blount County, Alabama,[68] born about 1828 in Alabama,[69] (daughter of Elijah Cowden and Anna Pettigrew) died 1907.[70]

37

v.

Millie Frances Higginbotham, born 12-22-1829 in Blount County, Alabama,[71] died 11-22-1900,51 buried in Remlap Methodist Church Cemetery, Blount County, Alabama,51 was living in Blount County, Alabama by 1840.[72]

In the 1850 census she is listed as Frances, in 1860 Millie, in 1880 Millie F. In the 1900 Jefferson County, Alabama census, she is age 70 and living with her daughter Gussie Sims. Vivian Dorman Vaughn relayed to her grandaughter that Gussie's mothers name was Frances Higginbotham. Frances' daughter Iowa Gillespie's death certificate says her mother is Frances Higginbotham. Vivian Vaughn said there were also children named Alma, Bessie, and Reubin, but these names have not been found on census records.

She married William P. Gillespie, about 1850, born 05-22-1825 in (possibly Montgomery County) Alabama,[73] (son of Abraham P. and Barthena A. Gillespie) died 12- 1-1895,51 buried in Remlap Methodist Church Cemetery, Blount County, Alabama.51 [74]

William purchased 120 acres of land in Blount County, Alabama on March 1, 1858, land patent #25955. The description is Section 2 Township 14 South Range 1 West N 1/2 SW & SENW. In 1878 in Blount County, Alabama, General Record U, he signs his mark on pg 436, indicating he was illiterate. During the Civil War, he served in Capt. Truss' Company of Vol. Alabama, and served in Company B, Davenports Battalion.

Enlisted Montevallo, Alabama in the 29th Alabama under Capt Musgrove, then Robinsons Company and was made 1st Lieutenant, Was born in Remlap. Matthew H. was also in Company C Avalanche County, 29th Ala Inf.

Is this census record for this Matthew Hamilton Higginbotham? It’s questionable because the birth dates don’t match.

The 1880 census shows him as Walter H.

He married (1) Malinda Emaline Cowden,2 also known as Lennie, Lena, 11- 6-1864 in Blount County, Alabama,[80] born 09-30-1843 in Blount County, Alabama,[81] (daughter of Wilson Carroll Cowden and Nancy Palmer) died 11-25-1881,[82] buried in Remlap Methodist Church Cemetery, Blount County, Alabama.[83]

“Southern Cowdens” says her name is Melenia Emiline. Her marriage record shows Milina J. Cowden. Her tombstone says "Lennie E. wife of M. H. Higginbotham, born Sep 30, 1843 died Nov 25, 1881". This is an old tombstone, not a new one. Matthew Higginbotham married Mary Bowerman on Nov 6, 1881, so either the tombstone date is wrong, or this is a different Matthew Higginbotham.

He married (2) Mary C. Bowerman,2 11- 6-1881 in Blount County, Alabama.[84]

He married (3) Nancy V. Bailey Huffstutler, 03- 9-1891 in Cleveland, Blount County, Alabama,2 born 01- 6-1860 in Alabama,[85] (daughter of William Huffstutler and Nancy Martin).

Ira Jackson Higginbotham, born 1842 in Alabama,[86] died in 1864, probably in in the Civil War,[87] buried in Remlap Methodist Church Cemetery, Blount County, Alabama.87

His marker is at Remlap Cemetery, but he may or may not be buried there.

8. James Riley2 Higginbotham, (Robert1) born 1800 in Tazewell County, Virginia, near McAdams Creek,8 died about 1848 in Jackson County, Alabama.[88]

After James death, his kids are living with their grandparents in 1850. His wife Rebecca may also have died before 1850, as she is not found on the census.

He married Rebecca McHaffey,2 03- 2-1831 in Madison County, Alabama,2 (daughter of John B. and Chany McHaffey).

It is possible she died before 1850, like her husband, as the children are living with the grandparents and she is not found on census.
