Excerpt from recent email from Robert Davis, professional genealogist, Wallace State Community College:
Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr., recently informed me that the Georgia Archives has combined the modern with the old. It used an automated process to scan the cards in its General Name File onto the Internet in alphabetical order. Everyone can view these hundreds of thousands of cards from any computer and for free. You can learn of letters from your ancestor to the governor, miscellaneous genealogical data from decades ago, public service records, and much more. The search method is a little crude but it saved the staff the expense of having to type in the heading of each card one by one:

This ancient card catalog is only the latest addition to the Georgia Archives’ Virtual Vault, a number of free resources at its web site. Other things that can be searched out include colonial and state land surveys; historic photographs; early death certificates; and Confederate pensions.Â
