These comments caused the Mormon community to get up in arms. I received emails filled with anger. It isn't worth it.
SMGF (Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation) does a 27 marker test for free, but they don't tell you the results. However, you can figure it out by changing the search criteria on their site over and over until you decode it yourself. This site provides no means of contacting closely related people. You must sign in to view results data. They are co-located with the Mormon church in Salt Lake City, and are apparently using this as a method to obtain more family trees/relationships. The information is used in "saving ordinances", including baptism and sealing a person to their spouse forever. These religious ceremonies are performed on behalf of deceased people, with a living person standing in. My note on the pedigree chart I submitted said "For use only with SMGF DNA Project and in Sorenson Database. NOT TO BE USED in Mormon Temple Ordinances nor for ANY religious purposes." They sent me a letter saying they couldn't guarantee anything.
Personal Note: I am a very spiritual person with a strong faith of my own, and have a number of ancestors who were Baptist or Methodist ministers and missionaries. There is no reason in my mind for their name to ever appear in a Mormon religious ceremony, as I feel certain they entered the Kingdom of God without man's intervention. And I can be quite certain some of my ancestors wouldn't want to be permanently sealed to their abusive spouse! Some people really don't care, but spiritual matters are very important to me, and I want the science to be separate from the religion, so this happens to be my own personal glitch.
