Notes regarding Prince and Crawley in Deed Books

On a genealogy research trip to Madison, Morgan Co, GA in the spring of 2010 a number of old records relating to the Prince family were found in the archives building beside the courthouse.  I found a map showing where Daniel & Sarah's house was.  I am almost certain I know where they are buried, at least the cemetery, but not the specific spot there (unmarked).  A survey of the property prepared in 1869 is located at the bottom of this page.

Daniel & Sarah's son Reubin married Crissie Crawley.  Samuel Crawley purchased land in Morgan Co in Oct 1808.  Charley Crawley purchased land there in 1815 when he was about age 48.  Charlie Crawley died in Morgan Co, GA in 1849.  There are numerous property transactions in the Crawley family for the next 40-50 years.

Book K, pg 124

Book K, pg 420
May 1849 -The first mention I find for Daniel Prince is a promissory note made in May 1849, where he loans Rosany McMahan $24.95  Rosany/Rusany puts up collateral of oxen and a cart.  It is unknown whether this is Daniel, wife Sarah, or his son, Daniel, wife Martha.

Book K, pg 749
Dec 1853 - Reubin Prince buys property from John Crawley on the "waters of Sandy Creek".

Book L, pg 338
Jan 1859 Reubin Prince sells to the Allens, "the place whereon Simon Crawley lives, adjoining land of John Crawley" and others.

Book L, pgs 339-340
Reubin Prince makes out a promissary note to Jackson Cheney for a negro woman named Delia & her infant child, about 19 years of age of dark complexion.  Also his interest in 4 other negros left by Simon Crawley to his heirs, his wife Crissie being one of those heirs.  I failed to copy pg 340, and the "conditions to be met" and date are on that page, but it's about 1859.

Book L pg 462
Mar 1846 the will of Henry Hillsabee gives to his mother-in-law, Sarah Prince, a negro girl by the name of Harriett, also mentions Daniel Prince.

Book L, pg 583-584
Daniel Prince sells the land "whereon I now reside" to Joseph Campbell MD, "containing two hundred acres more or less, the said Prince reserving one fourth of an acre for & as the family buring ground".
Indenture dated 7 Aug 1863, recorded 1 Sep 1863.

I have no record of when Daniel first became owner of this land, nor any definite indication whether this was the father or the son.  However, it appears that the son Daniel was in Henry Co, GA by 1845, so I'm going on the assumption the Daniel who sold the house site, but retained the burying ground was Daniel the father, and my Reubin left Morgan County shortly after his father died.

It is possible that his wife Sarah received the land via inheritance from her father, but since we don't know Sarah's last name, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Daniel is found in the tax digest in 1863, but not in the 1866 tax digest.  Son Elisha is in both.  I'm guessing Daniel was in poor health, and went to live with one of his children.

Book N, pg 13 & map insert

Joseph Campbell sells the parcel he bought from Daniel Prince, along with the rest of his property.  The deed mentions the "Daniel Prince Grave Yard".

"except also one fourth of an acre (the same being a Grave yard) on said parcel of land known as Daniel Prince's Grave Yard"

There is a surveyors drawing of this parcel of land glued in the deed book.  Using military district drawings, old maps, and landmarks shown on the survey, I plotted the survey map onto a current day topo map, and drove to the old Daniel Prince homesite.  Exactly where the house is shown on the survey, now sits Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.  And exactly where a "family graveyard" is marked out on the survey, is where the old part of the church cemetery is located.  There is lots of empty space in that area, probably unmarked graves of our Prince family.  People have ignored this church in their research because it is now a black church.  However, there is a sign on the front saying it was established in 1785.

Book N, pg 23-24
Dec 1870, Elisha Prince buys "property of the late Mathew E. Whitfield" sold on the courthouse steps at public outcry.

Book N, pg 50
Feb 1871 Osborn Prince (col) buys 54 8/10 acres from Early Thrasher.

Book PP, pg 455-456

Prince ....for $150 sells to said Olivia J Prince ... all and the entire interest he now has or may have in and to his fathers Elisha Princes estate late of said county deceased consisting of all effects of every kind and household and kitchen furniture also in his farming tools also his interest in and to the following lands belonging to deceased at the time of his death 576 acres (was in a hurry and didn't copy page 456)

Book S
Contains more records related to Elisha Prince, also several other Prince's.

My Reuben Prince is in Etowah Co, AL by 1870, so I didn't search all deed books in Morgan Co, GA.

Click on the thumbnail at top of page for a photo of the old part of the cemetery at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.  It is shown on the survey map of the Daniel Prince property with tiny dash marks beside the "residence", indicating graves, and mentioned in the deed as the "family burying ground".  The dots on the other side of the house appear to be an orchard or garden.
