of Witnesses, state of AL, I Geo. W. Bogan do solemnly swear that I am
personally acquainted with Hartwell Vaughan whose name is signed to the
foregoing application, and that I know of my own knowledge that the
said Hartwell Vaughn did serve as set forth in the application, and
that he did not desert the service, but was captured. Signed G. W.

Application
for the Relief of Confederate Soldiers & Widows. The State of
Alabama, Cherokee County. To the honorable board of pension examiners
of said county: Your petitioner Hartwell Vaughn respectfully represents
to your honorable board that he is a resident citizen of Cherokee
county, in the state of Alabama, and that he resided in said state on
the first day of January in 1899; that he enlisted in the service of
the confederate states as a private in company C in the 6th regiment of
Cavalry on the __ day of February 1862, at Cedar Bluff, in the State of
Alabama and that he was honorably discharged from such service on the
17 day of June 1864; that he is now unable to make a living by manual
labor on account of old age; that he is at the time filing ths
application 70 years of age and that his post office address is Round
Mountain, Alabama...... signs with his mark.

Personally
appeared before me, R. R. Savage Judge of Probate in and for said
county. H. Vaughn, who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that when a
private in Company C of 6th regiment of GA and while in discharge of
his duty in the service of the confederate states he contracted
disease. And in consequence of which disease & disability resulting
therefrom he has been rendered physically incapable of making a
livelihood by labor; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 13th day
of February, 1891, and is a resident at the date of this application;
that he is engaged in the business of farming that his taxable property
does not exceed four hundred dollars in value, and that his salary and
gross income does not amount to four hundred dollars per year.

county in said state personally appeared Hartwell Vaughn who being duly
sworn deposes and says: that while in the military or naval service of
this state, or confederate states, he was a private in company C of 6
regiment of GA, and that he did not desert the service of this state or
confederate states. That while in the discharge of his duties as such,
in the __ day of ___ 1862 at Moss (probably means Mossy) Creek, in the
state of Tenn he was shocked by “Bumm Shell” & is 68 yrs old..
