personally acquainted with Hartwell Vaughan whose name is signed to the
foregoing application, and that I know of my own knowledge that the
said Hartwell Vaughn did serve as set forth in the application, and
that he did not desert the service, but was captured. Signed G. W.

Application
for the Relief of Confederate Soldiers & Widows. The State of
Alabama, Cherokee County. To the honorable board of pension examiners
of said county: Your petitioner Hartwell Vaughn respectfully represents
to your honorable board that he is a resident citizen of Cherokee
county, in the state of Alabama, and that he resided in said state on
the first day of January in 1899; that he enlisted in the service of
the confederate states as a private in company C in the 6th regiment of
Cavalry on the __ day of February 1862, at Cedar Bluff, in the State of
Alabama and that he was honorably discharged from such service on the
17 day of June 1864; that he is now unable to make a living by manual
labor on account of old age; that he is at the time filing ths
application 70 years of age and that his post office address is Round
Mountain, Alabama...... signs with his mark.

Personally
appeared before me, R. R. Savage Judge of Probate in and for said
county. H. Vaughn, who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that when a
private in Company C of 6th regiment of GA and while in discharge of
his duty in the service of the confederate states he contracted
disease. And in consequence of which disease & disability resulting
therefrom he has been rendered physically incapable of making a
livelihood by labor; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 13th day
of February, 1891, and is a resident at the date of this application;
that he is engaged in the business of farming that his taxable property
does not exceed four hundred dollars in value, and that his salary and
gross income does not amount to four hundred dollars per year.

sworn deposes and says: that while in the military or naval service of
this state, or confederate states, he was a private in company C of 6
regiment of GA, and that he did not desert the service of this state or
confederate states. That while in the discharge of his duties as such,
in the __ day of ___ 1862 at Moss (probably means Mossy) Creek, in the
state of Tenn he was shocked by “Bumm Shell” & is 68 yrs old..

Remarks
The
claimant is a farmer nearly 90 years of age. He is a resident of
Cherokee Co, AL. He swears that he was opposed to secession &
always favored the Union cause. That he did nothing in favor of the
confederates & was ready and willing to aid the Union & had no
kindred in the Confederate Army. He was a soldier in the war of 1812
& is now drawing a pension. One of his witnesses is a Union man that
has been allowed a claim.
The property was taken in 1864 by Gen
Sherman’s Army. The fruit is not allowable. Mare hogs & sheep are
found(?). We recommend the payment of $156.

deposes and says: my age is 83 years, my PO address is Blue Pond, state
of Alabama, I have been a citizen of the state of Alabama since 1835 I
am now and always have been loyal to the United States. During and
through the late war I remained a loyal adherent to the cause and
government of the United States, and gave no aid or comfort to the enemy

The
petition of Hartwell Vaughn, Sr (name has ink blot on it) respectully
represents: that he is citizen of the United States and resides at
present near Blue Pond, Alabama.
That he has a claim against the
United States for property & supplies taken by officers &
soldiers of General Shermans Army while said Army was encamped near
Gaylesville Cherokee County Alabama. That petitioner was the original
owner of said property and still owns said claim.
That your
petitioner at the time of the taking of the property mentioned in the
following schedule, resided near Blue Pond Cherokee County Alabama
To wit:
one white mare 6 years old 1st class worth $150.00
4 fat pork hogs 150# each - 600 # @ 10c
11 head of sheep @ $2.00

says my name is Hartwell Vaughn Sr age 89 years I live in Cherokee County Alabama. I have lived here for 40 years my occupation is farming
(2) I am the claimant and am interested in the success of my claim.
(3)I was borned in Greenville District
(4)South Carolina. I was living where I __ live before the war and all the time during the war and never changed my residence
(5)Nor business during the war = for the ___
(6)all the time during the war I never done anything against the union in my life.
(7)I was willing to do all that I could for the union during the war and ___ yet I served in the War of 1812 and am drawing

pension now. I fed a great many soldiers during the war that was about
all that I could do I was to old I hardly ever left home

during the war= I never contributed any money or property to the US
government during the war. I was old and not able to work and didn't
think I was able to give anything only what the
(12)soldiers eat off of me = I took sides

C. =Sanford here in this county to go to Montgomery Alabama as a
deligate to vote against secession and the constitution of the southern
confederacy

bills ?? and all other _____ during the war. ??? was glad when the
rebels had to surrender.

(74) in the day time = I made complaing to the soldiers but it never don any good they said that they had to live off of

much while the soldiers were here I new that they would take what they
wanted

no other claim this is the only claim that has ever been presented by
me to congress or any other tribunal? During the war or since

close = this property was taken by troops under command of General
Sherman in 1864 they were encamped at Galesville in this

= I saw the US troops take from my stable one white or gray mare. She
was 6 years old and in very good order. The soldiers took 4 hogs out of
my hog pen they were fat and they were 2 & 3 years old and would
weigh not less than 150 each I saw the US soldiers take from my grass
lot eleven head of sheep. They drove the sheep with them in the
direction of their camp at Galesville in this

I had 2 bushels of dried fruit in 2 baskets in my house and one of the
soldiers took that off with him. The hogs were killed and hauld off in
a waggon. The mare was rode off by one of the soldiers = I don't
remember how many men there was = __ but to the best of my recollection
there was about 15 or 20 soldiers = I don't remember son, whether there
was an officer with the men or not I can't give any reason for their
taking the property only they said that they had to live on some body
___ they had to subsist in the county.

are the same person] I live with my father in Cherokee county Alabama I
was raised here in this county my occupation

daughter of the claimant and have never been married and the claimant
depends on me to make his support. And I am

Rev. R. W. Vaughn dies at Blount Highlands.
Rev. Richard W. Vaughn died at his home at Blount Highlands, on route 1, Remlap, Tuesday. His death was due to a complication of diseases. He had been in declining health for some time.
Mr Vaughn was 74 years of age and for many years had been a minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian church and was well known throughout this county.
The deceased is survived by four sons, M. A. Vaughn, of Remlap; Clint and Ernest Vaughn, of route 4, Oneonta and Percy Vaughn; five daughters, Mrs. J. B. Horton, of route 1, Remlap; Mrs. J. P. Little, of Remlap; Mrs. A. Sims, of Allgood; Mrs. McCay, of Village Springs, and Mrs. Burtram, of Springville; one sister, Mrs. A. J. Turner, of route 1, Cleveland.
The funeral services were held at Remlap and were conducted by Revs. Mays and Fendley, with Wade in charge.
