St. Clair

St. Clair Co, AL sunset on the Coosa river

St. Clair county, Alabama has great resources for researching family genealogy.  The main courthouse is in Ashville.  After building the new Probate Office across from the old Courthouse, most of the older records were moved into the Archive building, which is also across from the old Courthouse, but on an opposite corner.  The Archive building is a great day trip, half museum, half library, and half courthouse books.  Yes, I know you can't have that many halves!

Before modern transportation, travel was difficult, getting over the mountain into Ashville, in the winter especially, or with lots of rain, made the roads impassable.  A new courthouse was built in Pell City, so there are now 2 active courthouses.  I'm not clear on which courthouse has what records.  I've done virtually all my genealogy research in the Ashville Archives, since that is where the oldest records are located.

St. Clair is known for lake life living, boating, fishing, and enjoying the country side.
