The Baird - Sims Bible

This one hundred sixty plus year old Bible was published in 1840.  Its first owner was Joseph C. Baird.  It is currently (2005) owned by a granddaughter of Esther Sims Stephenson (1892-1982) in Birmingham, Alabama, whose family has had possession of the Bible for around one hundred forty years.  Therefore this writer refers to this Bible as the Baird – Sims Bible.

Beverly Hutson Sims was born in South Carolina on September 24, in about 1824. His tombstone records 1820. An analysis of census data indicates around 1824. His mother was named Nancy and she was born in South Carolina in about 1783. His father was born in Virginia and research indicates that his father was James whose estate is mentioned in the estate records of Benton County, AL. on March 10, 1843 and April 12, 1843.

Elijah Adison Thornhill was born February 19, 1843 at Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia.  He was the second son and fourth known child of Jesse A. and Arabella (Jones) Thornhill who were married Thursday, August 10, 1826 in Camden, Kershaw County, South Carolina. The August 12,1826 issue of the Camden Journal recorded the marriage and stated that they were "both of this place").

King (possibly Solomon or Zachariah) CHANDLER was born ca. 1798 in South Carolina. He was named as administrator of his father's will in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina in 1820.

King's father William H. CHANDLER filed his will on September 3, 1820 in Greenville County, S.C. William died before November 1, 1820 when his will was proven. William's wife's name was Frances.

William's will indicates the following children:

Moses ABEL was born about 1801 in South Carolina. He married in Knox County, Tennessee on July 1, 1823 to Elizabeth (Betsy) McHenry. He lived in McMinn County, Tennessee in 1830. Based on the birthplaces of his children as listed in U.S. Census reports, he moved between 1833 and 1835 to Alabama where in 1850 and 1860 he lived in Benton County (now Calhoun County). Between 1860 and 1863 (marriage of son Hugh) he moved to north Jefferson County where he lived very close to the Blount-Jefferson County line.

Preface

In 1850 Mrs. Rody Hughes, age 84,who gave her residence as Blount County, Alabama appeared in court in Blount County with her son William age 61. She testified that she was present at the marriage of her sister Dorcas to Stephen Mullins in early April, 1792 in Laurence (sic) County, S.C. She testified that the marriage was a short time before the birth of her (Rody's) third child.
